Grey Role-play

What is grey roleplay?

Grey roleplay is the introduction of a universe that is not "Strict RP" nor Out of Character (abbreviated as OOC). The concept of a greyrp universe that you must portray yourself as your character as is in the universe, unlike Strict RP however, you are not limited to knowledge of the specific universe you are role-playing in, you can bring up and discuss a wide variety of subjects, you are also able to discuss OOC content as long as you keep your character.

In many OOC areas from roleplay locations, you will find that many people don't actually go fully out of character, but instead retain their character's characteristics and just express non-RP universe subjects. These can be from theories of space technology to a cheese burger that made these people feel ill. In these instances, you will find these players will portray themselves as ill in the universe, discussing how they ate that burger that did not go down well. Flicking a tail in annoyance (should their character have a tail), if they got proven wrong in an argument etc. - This is essentially the source of where GreyRP comes from.

Because of the free form nature of GreyRP, many people find it a lot less stressful to play and can play with very little knowledge of the background story lines. There is no constant need or worry to keep a extremely consistent story along with every action you do, which in turn takes a lot of heavy thinking requirements off the players, so they can actually enjoy themselves for longer periods of time in the area, as it does not require much continuous mental abilities to keep things going.

What fun stuff can be done with GreyRP?

GreyRP can be a lot of fun in various ways, you can take events that occur and turn them around to explain how they occurred in the RP universe itself (note: you are not required to do this, but you can if you want) - This leads to a lot of fun situations where you can explain that, for example. A space craft crashed into yours and you were unable to dislodge it as it seems absolutely impervious to your mega super hyper cannon system - In reality, you couldn't dislodge it because both your vehicles were not physical in the virtual world, so nothing physical (weapons) can interact with the two space crafts.

You can get into situations similar to sitcoms where, keeping within the universe you can role-play events which can lead up to rather hilarious events by exploiting flaws and toying with other players - These generally don't occur in other role-play environments as you are meant to progress a serious story continuously.

Can I play seriously in a GreyRP environment?

In summary, yes - It is completely possible, but nobody is required to do so.

GreyRP is a very wide net in terms of what can be done in a role-play environment, one major difference to strict RP however is that you are not going to find game masters (people who dictate the role play world and rules) establish the guidelines (some of these can be bent with in reason), dynamics of the setting itself and have a tendency to avoid dictating the individual characters. People cannot be forced to be completely serious (like in other role-play areas), but they can do so by choice.

Any rules with GreyRP?

Some of these rules apply to RPs in general.

  • Listen to the Game Masters (GMs). If a GM says the world is flat, the world is flat in the universe - no discussion.
  • Don't over do it is a big one. Just because you have free reign over the subjects you discuss and RP abilities does not give you God powers, overdoing would also include flooding text chat, overly bugging people and throwing off conversations/role-play constantly.
  • Be aware of your spacial location and other people's spacial locations. Unless you're using a radio device, you probably can't talk through walls, space, water and disturbances in the space time continuum.
  • Ridiculously out of place characters. An astronaut in a role-play based in the dark ages, don't even try to make an excuse for it's existence, don't do it.
  • Complex scene matters such as time travel require an abudance of cooperation from other players and GMs directing the entire story line, this generally does not happen in GreyRP.
  • Privacy. Do not bust into private areas without permission, this includes direct teleports.
  • Excessive OOC chat, this is not OOC.
  • asl? The age and sex can be estimated from the appearance of the person, the location, in-front of you. This not an OOC chat or dating service.
